Eurohistory's Newest Book… ALBANY – One Family, Two Destinies

It is with great pleasure that we announce to our readers the publication of our newest book, ALBANY – One Family, Two Destinies.

The inspiration for this book emanated from a conversation the authors had with HH Prince Andreas of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, who had traveled to The Hague to be at the official presentation of his memoirs, I Did It My Way... The prince, whose biography he wrote with the assistance of Arturo E. Beéche, suggested that perhaps a book on all the descendants of the Duke of Albany, his great-grandfather, would be of interest to royalty enthusiasts and book collectors.

The fateful meeting took place during the Third Royal Gatherings Conference, a yearly event hosted by Eurohistory and Hoogstraten English Bookstore, in November 2015. The previous year, Mr. Golden had authored a similar book on the descendants of the Duke of Connaught. In 2013, Mr. Beéche had authored The Coburgs of Europe, a book that Prince Andreas considers to be the "gold standard" on his family's history. Hence, to the prince it seemed like a logical suggestion that both authors would cooperate in the writing of the present volume. Both Mr. Golden and Mr. Beéche are deeply thankful to Prince Andreas for encouraging, not only the subject of this book, but also their joint effort.

The authors hope that in years to come, they will be able to cooperate in further publications on various royal topics.

The images used in this book come from the private collection of Mr. Robert Golden, as well as that of Mr. Arturo E. Beéche. A considerable number of images came from the vast Eurohistory Royal Photo Archive, founded by Mr. Arturo E. Beéche in 1997. Some images were kindly donated by several descendants of Princess Alice, Countess of Athlone. A few were donated by HH Prince Andreas of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, whose considerable collection was curated by Mr. Arturo E. Beéche. The Swedish Royal Palace in Stockholm must be thanked as well for providing images of the current King and his family.

ALBANY – One Family, Two Destinies will begin selling on AMAZON (https://www.amazon.com/dp/1944207058on December 12 and we expect to start shipping copies immediately!

The book can also be purchased at our usual supporting venues: MAJESTY (which will have a full feature of the book in the January 2017 issue), Librairie Galignani in Paris, and, of course, Hoogstraten English Bookstore in The Hague (http://www.hoogstraten.nl)

ALBANY – One Dynasty, Two Destinies

Eurohistory is proud to bring to you our 28th book!

ALBANY – One Dynasty, Two Destinies is a photographic history of the descendants of Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany, Queen Victoria's youngest son.

Married to the former Princess Helen of Waldeck-Pyrmont, the very talented Prince Leopold did not allow hemophilia to hinder the successful life he dreamt of leading.

Although he did not live long enough to meet his youngest child, a baby boy named Charles Edward, Leopold left an indelible mark on his children.

Today the descendants of the Duke and Duchess of Albany are found in England, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the USA, Finland, and, of course, Sweden!

This handsomely illustrated work (525 images in 272 glossy pages), covers all the descendants of Prince Leopold and Princess Helen. The authors, both noted royal historians with nearly twenty books to their name, have done extensive research to bring to the reader the most comprehensive collection of Albany descendants ever published. Among the photos used in the book, many were donated by descendants of Prince Leopold. In fact, no other published work has ever brought to the reader such a large selection of photos of Princess Alice, Countess of Athlone, and her descendants. Also, it is worth mentioning that many of the descendants of the 2nd Duke of Albany, later known as Carl Eduard, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, contributed rare images to include in this exquisite production. Among the families and dynasties included in this book are: Athlone, Abel Smith, Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, Sweden, Castell-Rüdenhausen, Saxe-Meiningen, Hohenzollern, to name but a few.

Readers will be mesmerized by the stories told by the authors, as well as by the uniqueness of the images chosen to illustrate their first joint project!

Kudos to Mr Golden and Mr Beéche  for putting together beautiful book filled with spellbinding narrative, as well as countess never-before-seen images of this little-known branch of Queen Victoria's descendants!

The book will be out in about four weeks and will sell for $48.95 plus shipping. We expect that our usual partners (MAJESTY, Hoogstraten English Bookstore, and Galignani) will sell the book. It will also be available through Eurohistory and our AMAZON seller page.

+ 19th Duke of Medinaceli (1962-2016)

In the early hours of August 19, news reached me of the sad passing of a good friend, Marco de Hohenlohe-Langenburg y Medina, 19th Duke of Medinaceli, Head of the Premier Noble House of Spain.

Marco was born in Madrid on March 8, 1962. He was the firstborn son of Prince Maximilian of Hohenlohe-Langenburg and of his wife doña Ana de Medina y Fernández de Córdoba, IX Countess of Ofalia and XIII Marchioness of Navahermosa. Doña Ana happened to be the eldest of four children of doña Victoria Eugenia Fernández de Córdoba, XVIII Duchess of Medinaceli. In due course, doña Ana gave birth to two further children, Pablo and Flavia, both of whom survive their brother.

Marco, who was divorced from Sandra Schmidt-Polex, with whom he fathered two children (Victoria and Alex), succeeded his grandmother as Duke of Medinaceli in 2013, his mother having predeceased her mother.

Since his succession to the famed dukedom, Marco settled at the magnificent Casa de Pilatos, the palace in Seville that the Medinacelis have called home for centuries. Just a few months ago, I emailed Marco some XIX century photos that I purchased at auction of the Casa de Pilatos. He was thrilled with them for being head of the Medinaceli Foundation was a position in which he took immense pride.
Marco was diagnosed with cancer some time ago. This illness sent him to the hospital throughout the last year. Every time he valiantly recovered, he was back at home as soon as possible and reinitiated his daily routine of going out to breakfast, talking with local friends and reading the newspaper. He always seemed quite content, even though life had sent him countless challenges. Unfortunately, treatment failed to save Marco and in the end he was unable to overcome this challenge as he had defeated so many others in his, at times, difficult and tragic life.

I will miss our weekly emails and Facebook chats, as well as his postings from beautiful Sevilla, where he was so very happy. Marco had enormous potential and his early death is a sad event in the history of his dynasty, as well as a loss to those who loved and knew him.

Doña Victoria Eugenia de Hohenlohe-Langenburg y Schmidt-Polex will succeed her father as XX Duchess of Medinaceli once she requests recognition as legitimate heir to the title and countless others in her family’s possession.

Marco, dear friend, we will miss your laugh and unique sense of humor, as well as your irreverent jokes!

May You Rest in Peace...

Obituary: Queen Anne of Romania (1923-2016)

Anne of Romania, the loyal and modest wife of Romania’s last monarch, King Michael, has died, Romania’s royal house said. She was 92.
Anne died Monday afternoon at a hospital in Morges, Switzerland, surrounded by family including four of her daughters, a statement said.
Michael, 94, who is suffering from cancer, visited her every day, and she received the last rites on Sunday, the statement said.
Born Princess Anne of Bourbon-Parma, she met Michael in November 1947 when they had both come for the wedding of the future Queen Elizabeth II and Philip Mountbatten in London.

A Life for the Tsar: Triumph and Tragedy at the Coronation of Tsar Nicholas II (a peek inside)

This excellent volume by the very talented Janet Ashton and Greg King brings to life the last coronation of Imperial Russia!

We began shipping copies to buyers last week and the book thus far is being very well received!

When asked, recently, how much the events of the Coronation changed history, Ms Ashton replied:

Indeed, and Greg and I discuss this fact in the book (as you'd expect! :-) ). We think, though, that he could have had a successful reign despite Khodynka if he had handled the tragedy differently. Other reigns also got off to rocky starts, but the way Tsars reacted determined the outcome. Khodynka became pivotal to everything that happened for the next twenty years.

At the beginning of the book we "look at people looking at Nicholas" and discuss the different expectation they had of this young man and his wife, who was generally considered to be British and liberal, standing together at the verge if the twentieth century. Not everyone had positive expectations of him, but a lot did (it's interesting to compare who expected what), and that's what makes it all such an important moment in Russian history after the entrenchment of Alexander III's reign. There was so much hanging on the question of what sort of Tsar Nicholas would turn out to be.

We thought that perhaps those interested in the book might like to get a quick peek inside!

The book is listed on AMAZON.com and AMAZON.co.uk – while for YOUR convenience it is also sold at the following site of choice for royal enthusiasts and Romanovphiles:

A Life for the Tsar: Triumph and Tragedy at the Coronation of Emperor Nicholas II

Our newest book,

A Life for the Tsar: Triumph and Tragedy at the Coronation of Emperor Nicholas II, has arrived three weeks ahead of schedule!!!!

We will begin shipping all pre-orders on Saturday morning!

This book is the result of a long, organic evolution. Fascinated as the authors both are with the Romanov Dynasty and interested in pursuing unique and exciting aspects of its history, they stumbled upon the Coronation of Nicholas II as a potential subject quite by accident. The ceremony itself formed an integral part of Greg King’s 2005 work The Court of the Last Tsar: Pomp, Power, and Pageantry in the Reign of Nicholas II. In the research and writing process, Janet Ashton discovered a wealth of previously neglected materials on the subject that helped bring the event to dramatic life: so much material, in fact, that it was impossible to include more than a tantalizing hint in a single chapter.

The Coronation was beautiful, opulent, and almost surreal. Wispy clouds of incense drifted upwards through golden shafts of sunshine, while the “high, clear voices of the boys mingled with the deeper bass notes of the men” intoning sonorous hymns as Russia unknowingly celebrated the coronation of its last emperor. Flickering flames of a thousand votive candles shimmered over gowns of silver brocade, flashed across gilded icons, sparkled against diamonds, and glanced on medals. This intoxicating pageant of sounds and colors, scents and sensations left onlookers “dazed.” Nicholas II’s Coronation in Moscow’s Cathedral of the Assumption that May of 1896 was a carefully crafted piece of stagecraft, meant to transport the densely packed congregation to a realm of intense spiritual power fused to unyielding autocracy. The scene was not without irony: the imperial splendor and religious rituals of the Russian Orthodox Church celebrated a monarch who scarcely carried a drop of Russian blood in his veins.

The book contains over 220 beautiful images illustrating 248 glossy pages!

A Life for the Tsar: Triumph and Tragedy at the Coronation of Emperor Nicholas II is now listed on AMAZON.COM and will be sold by our Dutch partners Hoogstraten English Bookstore.

We hope that Librairie Galignani (Paris) and the great team at MAJESTY Magazine will also begin selling this excellent production soon!

Kudos to the very talented Greg King and Janet Ashton, longtime Eurohistory collaborators, for a magnificent work of Romanov historiography!

Diana's ancestral home remodeled ...

When a young Lady Diana roamed the halls of Althorp Estate, she was forbidden to touch anything or even talk much. But the new mistress of her childhood home has a different vision for the 508-year-old mansion. Countess Karen Spencer, the third wife of Earl Charles Spencer, has initiated some unusual decor changes, including a bouncy castle in the silk-lined state dining room.
"A lot of people are quite surprised by it," Diana's sister-in-law told People. "But I've always believed this house should be lived in." Her philosophy is definitely a complete reversal from the previous household rules.

King Michael requests not to pay taxes

A law passed recently exempts war veterans from property taxes...so if it works for the soldier, it should work for the commander!

Funeral of HRH Prince Alexander of Yugoslavia

The late Prince Alexander of Yugoslavia.

The funeral of HRH Prince Alexander of Yugoslavia was held inside the Royal Mausoleum (and Church) at Oplenac, near Topola, Serbia.

The emotional ceremony took place on Friday, May 20, 2016. Attending were the following royalties:

HRH Crown Prince Alexander
HRH Crown Princess Katherine
HRH Hereditary Prince Peter
HRH Princess Linda
HRH Prince Michael
HRH Princess Barbara
HRH Prince Michel
HRH Prince Serge
HRH Princess Eleonor
HRH Prince Dusan
TSH Prince Eugen and Princess Maria Theresia (Maresi) of Liechtenstein
HSH Prince Johannes of Liechtenstein
HSH Princess Marie of Liechtenstein (Countess v.u.z. Trauttmansdorf-Weinsberg)
HSH Princess Sophie of Liechtesntein (Countess Hoyos)
Count Hans-Veit zu Toerring-Jettenbach
Hereditary Count Ignaz zu Toerring-Jettenbach

Prince Alexander was an air pilot. He was keenly interested in airplanes. Some years ago, during one of his visits to Serbia he was invited to tour the air academy and taken on a fighter jet flight. He was delighted and always remembered that experience as one of his favorite ones. Another favorite memory was driving his Greek (Russian) grandmother down a steep hill at one of the royal estates. Her vocabulary concerning his driving skills (he was a teenager), well, I cannot repeat what came out of Helen Vladimirova's lips!

Anyhow...because of his interest in the Serbian Air Force his casket was carried into the church at Oplenac by fighter pilots. I know he would have been deeply touched by that.

Prince Alexander always told me how fond he had been of the late King Alexander of Yugoslavia, with whom he shared many passions: hunting, mechanics, driving fast cars, physical exercise.

I was blessed with having Prince Alexander as a friend, a very good friend. Through him and his beloved wife Princess Barbara, I was able to connect to many other royal relations of theirs. Alexander always gave me his "seal" of approval and many times personally approached relations of his, near and far, whom I wanted to establish bonds.

Crown Prince Alexander, Head of House Karageorgevitch, has kindly made the photos used in this report available to visitors to his website. For that, I am quite thankful!

Other photos sent to us by one of Prince Alexander's cousins, Count Hasn-Veit zu Toerring-Jettenbach, will be shared with readers of our magazine, EUROHISTORY.

Inside Issue CX (Summer 2016) of EUROHISTORY, we will have a tribute to Prince Alexander, including photos taken for us by one of the attending "royals."

I spoke with Princess Barbara today and she informed me that her late husband's memorial mass will take place in paris on June 20, 2016. I hope to be there to render homage to one of the kindest, old-style gentlemen I knew ... a real life "scoundrel" who made my life richer!
